About Mrs. Slagle

My name is Kelly Slagle and I am very excited to be a fifth grade teacher.  As for my teaching history, I taught English as a foreign language to both children and adults for the British Institute in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 2005, I taught 3rd and 4th grade summer school and also a 4th/5th grade split class for Nooksack Elementary. I was also a K-5 special education teacher for one year at Nooksack Valley Elementary before moving to Bernice Vossbeck Elementary. I was the K-5 Special Education teacher for six years, and also the Title I Reading Coordinator for four of those years.  Then, I became a first grade teacher in 2012 and have taught fifth grade ever since. I am fortunate to be part of the Bernice Vossbeck family and to have your child in my class!

I am originally from Denver, Colorado and Kalispell, Montana where many of my family members remain. I attended school at the University of Montana before completing my TOEFL certificate and moving to Jakarta, Indonesia to teach English as a Foreign Language. I moved to Bellingham from Jakarta in 2001 and continued my education at WWU, where I got my K-8 teaching/Special Education certificate and Certificate of English Language Teaching endorsement. This was also the year when I met my husband.

We have one cat (Sadie) and three Labrador retrievers named Chase, Maddie and Luna. We enjoy camping, hiking, traveling and we both love to read. We seek learning about different parts of the world. Since my mom lives in central Mexico, I have had the pleasure of visiting and learning more about the Mexico culture.

Excited to be part of your child’s learning, I will help your child to feel competent and energized during our time at school. We will explore and discover together, building on what your child already knows and I will invite him or her to travel as far as possible on different learning journeys. I want your child’s time at school with me to be the most joyful of experiences while your child has the opportunity to learn to his or her potential. My background in special education has prepared me for tailoring instruction to meet individual needs, which means you will see your child working in whole group, small group and possibly one-on-one on settings.
